How Much Does a 4kW Solar Panel System Cost?

Types of Solar Panels

A 4kw solar panel can be constructed from different types of solar PV panel. Each type of panel will convert the rays of the sun into electricity but have different efficiency levels and, therefore, costs. The newest and most expensive types are hybrid panels. The advantage of these panels is they also create heat as well as the electricity. Creating the hot water too makes these the most efficient type of panel on the market. As they are the most efficient, they require the least area to be installed to create a 4kW system. The next two types of panel are monocrystalline and polycrystalline. These are both made from silicone, with the main difference being a monocrystalline panel is cut from a single crystal, whereas a polycrystalline panel is cut from several crystals. Monocrystalline panels are more efficient, but more expensive than polycrystalline panels. Lastly, there are amorphous panels, these are in the structure of the roof covering rather than mounted and are the least efficient, as well as the cheapest of all photovoltaic panels.

Cost of a 4kw System

The cost of a solar system is made up of the cost of the panels, the installation work and any additional costs. Additional costs are usually limited to strengthening the roof if required to hold the weight of the panels. This is typically in the region of a few hundred pounds. Occasionally planning consent may be required for panels which creates an additional cost. This, however, is a rarity. Installation costs will vary depending on the chosen installation site. If your roof is particularly difficult to access, this may result in higher costs. Typically, for a monocrystalline 4kw system on a standard installation costs tend to be between £12,000 and £14,000. However, the cost of an individual clients system cannot be confirmed until the installation company have discussed their installation in detail. Most installation companies advertise on the internet so shopping around to get the best deal for your installation is a relatively simple process.

Cashback and Free Installation

When a solar PV system of less than 5kw is installed by an MCS approved installation company, the system owner is eligible for government backed cashback known as feed in tariffs. These tariffs are for twenty five years and are currently set at 43.3p per kilo watt hour the system generates. Estimated cashback for a 4kw system would be between £900 and £1,100 a year. The income is tax free and this, along within the drop in bills would mean, on average, the cost of a 4kw system would be recouped within around 15 years. Some companies install 4kw systems for free. In this case, the householder will benefit from free or reduced bills however the installation company will retain the right to the feed in tariffs.
